The Entrepreneurship Programme and Incubator of the University of Luxembourg are a kind of Formula One racing team that teaches, trains and mentors each startup founder so he/she can become a highly competitive entrepreneur and win the international race of innovation.

Siva Bactavatchalou, ingénieur en électrotechnique et informatique industrielle, a travaillé en R&D dans de grands groupes, puis a été cofondateur d'une startup deep tech. Siva est actuellement Head of Entrepreneurship Programe à l'Université du Luxembourg.
Son programme ouvert à tous les membres de l'Université (étudiants, chercheurs et alumni) a comme objectif d'offir aux candidats le mindset et le skillset nécessaire pour devenir un entrepreneur compétitif.

Teachers write words on the whiteboard, teach and ask questions to their schoolchildren by using words, and schoolchildren are supposed to answers to questions in words. Words are the basement of teaching.
What if we were wrong?
What if words were the problem of children dropping out of Math?
And as you may know, dropping out of Math could have a domino effect on dropping out the rest of the disciplines taught.
In Luxembourg, the National language is Luxembourguish, but Luxembourg is a highly international country in which only 37% of children are native Luxembourguish speaker at primary school. You can find in a classroom children coming from 10 different European countries!
Therefore teaching math with words can be a good fit only for native children. The others will drop out.
In fact, even among native speakers, trying to understand math taugh with words is still a challenge. Math are not made to express words, and therefore, math should never be taugh with words!
This is the challenge Dr. Tahereh Pazouki took up.
Dr. Tahereh Pazouki is a computer scientist by training and holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Luxembourg. During her research, she applied her computer science skills in the field of cognitive psychology. This is how Magrid came to life. Magrid is a revolutionary solution which removes the language barrier in learning math.

Les enseignants écrivent des mots sur le tableau blanc, enseignent et posent des questions à leurs écoliers en utilisant des mots, et les écoliers sont censés répondre aux questions avec des mots. Les mots sont la base de l'enseignement.
Et si on se trompait ?
Et si les mots étaient le problème des enfants qui abandonnent les mathématiques ?
Et comme vous le savez peut-être, l'abandon des mathématiques pourrait avoir un effet domino sur l'abandon du reste des disciplines enseignées.
Au Luxembourg, la langue nationale est le luxembourgeois, mais le Luxembourg est un pays très international dans lequel seulement 37% des enfants sont de langue maternelle luxembourgeoise à l'école primaire. Vous pouvez retrouver dans une classe des enfants venant de 10 pays européens différents !
Par conséquent, l'enseignement des mathématiques avec des mots ne peut convenir qu'aux enfants autochtones. Les autres abandonneront.
En fait, même parmi les locuteurs natifs, essayer de comprendre les mathématiques enseignées avec des mots est toujours un défi. Les mathématiques ne sont pas faites pour exprimer des mots, et par conséquent, les mathématiques ne devraient jamais être enseignées avec des mots !
C'est le défi que le Dr Tahereh Pazouki a relevé.
Dr. Tahereh Pazouki est informaticienne de formation et titulaire d'un doctorat en psychologie de l'Université du Luxembourg. Au cours de ses recherches, elle a appliqué ses compétences en informatique dans le domaine de la psychologie cognitive. C'est ainsi que Magrid est né. Magrid est une solution révolutionnaire qui supprime la barrière de la langue dans l'apprentissage des mathématiques.

Mathematics is particularly difficult especially when one enters secondary school. And students need personalized support, feedback, and lots of practice. Each student deserves to have her personal tutor to help with homework, but also in class because the teacher cannot offer her attention to all the students at the same time.
What if your child could solve a math problem and check immediatley if he is right or wrong, and if his answer is wrong, where exactly he did his mistake or mistakes?

Africa produces countless brilliant minds in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engeneering and Medicine) and sent all around the World. What if an organization would exist to connect all these talents together, give them voice and promote their path in STEM and their accomplisments? With the help of a such organization, these brilliant minds could shine gloablly and be a role model for all the youth of Africa.
This is the challenge Dr. Nathasia Mudiwa Muwanigwa took up. She cofounded VSA - Visibility STEM Africa.
Visibility STEM Africa’s vision is to create an equitable, empowering and inclusive global network which supports and prepares Africans in STEM for a changing world that requires creative and innovative solutions. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields play an integral role in our day-to-day lives and pervade every facet of modern day society.
Until now, there have been very few efforts to amplify African voices within STEM and showcase the significant efforts being made across the continent and the Diaspora. VSA mission is to change this narrative and highlight the important contributions that Africans are making in STEM: «By sharing our stories with the world, in our own voices, we will inspire the next generation.»
Beyond amplifying African voices in the STEM space, VSA platform aims to foster collaboration, facilitate the creation of outreach projects and most importantly, to create a visible and realistic path for the next generation of young Africans who want to pursue STEM careers.
Dr Nathasia Mudiwa Muwanigwa is PhD in neurobiology and conducts breakthrough research in the team led by Prof. Dr. Jens Schwamborn at the Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine. Her research concerns the cellular and molecular mechanism of Parkinson disease with the use of mini-brains (organoïds) derived from human induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (hiPSCs).

C'est le défi que le Dr Nathasia Mudiwa Muwanigwa a relevé. Elle a cofondé VSA - Visibility STEM Africa.
La vision de Visibility STIM Africa est de créer un réseau mondial équitable, responsabilisant et inclusif qui soutient et prépare les Africains en STIM à un monde en évolution qui nécessite des solutions créatives et innovantes. Les domaines STIM (Science, Technologie, Ingénierie et Mathématiques) jouent un rôle essentiel dans notre vie quotidienne et imprègnent toutes les facettes de la société moderne.
Jusqu'à présent, très peu d'efforts ont été déployés pour amplifier les voix africaines au sein des STIM et mettre en valeur les efforts importants déployés à travers le continent et la diaspora. La mission de VSA est de changer ce récit et de mettre en évidence les contributions importantes que les Africains apportent aux STIM: «En partageant nos histoires avec le monde, de notre propre voix, nous inspirerons la prochaine génération.»
Au-delà de l'amplification des voix africaines dans l'espace STIM, la plate-forme VSA vise à favoriser la collaboration, à faciliter la création de projets de sensibilisation et, surtout, à créer un chemin visible et réaliste pour la prochaine génération de jeunes Africains qui souhaitent poursuivre des carrières STIM.
Le Dr Nathasia Mudiwa Muwanigwa est docteur en neurobiologie et mène des recherches de pointe dans l'équipe dirigée par le professeur Jens Schwamborn au Luxembourg Center for Systems Biomedicine.
